Responding to God’s love

"God so loves the world that he gave us His only Son," - John 3:16

What comes to your mind when you were reading the quote? I can't imagine how hard it is for a parent to give up his/her child for somebody else's benefit. How much more difficult it is for God, who has the ability to save His Son who is more deserving and blameless, but chose not to for our benefit?

My appreciation of God's love for me deepens through the years. However, I never really understood the mystery surrounding why God did what he did for me and for the world.

Sometimes I feel depressed from my failings and tried to hide from God like Adam when he realised he was naked. But the stark reality remains - God continues to love unconditionally.

Its almost like God having a bottomless tank of love and He's waiting eagerly to pour the contents in it into our hearts, as much as we can receive.

I do not forsee myself able to grasp the surface of God's deep love for me in a lifetime. It is like having the impossible dream of drinking an ocean dry.

However Divine mysteries are meant to be lived; not explained by human wisdom.

I do know that I can give Him my response - to receive His divine gift with gratitude or to reject it.

We may be thinking that God's love is a one way traffic. God gives, we receive. At times, we share it with others. But how many times do we remember that we too are capable of loving God back. Yes God can actually be loved!

The ability to love God and others doesnt come from our own strengths but, “We love because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19-21). God taking the initiative to love. Its only then we are empowered by His example.

The greatest commandments given by Jesus are to “Love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength” and “Love others as much as you love yourself.” (Mark 12:30-31).

Am I loving God the same degree I am loved by Him? Of course no one can outdo God in generosity, but am I loving Him wholeheartedly, with all my heart, soul, mind and strength? What is preventing me from doing so? A false image of God? a past hurt?

What does it mean to surrender to love's true call?

GOD bless!
